Day 4 OCD: Understanding Compulsions
Today we’re going to look at something that often hides in plain sight.
Compulsions.
When OCD sounds the alarm, the mind quickly searches for something that will make the anxiety go away — checking, reviewing, analyzing, seeking reassurance, or mentally trying to “fix” the thought.
These responses can bring short-term relief, but they also teach the brain that the alarm was necessary.
Over time, this keeps the OCD cycle going.
On Day 4, we’re focusing on the second half of the change process: responding differently to compulsions. Instead of automatically reacting to the urge to fix, solve, or neutralize the thought, we begin learning how to pause and allow the discomfort to exist without feeding the cycle.
Inside today’s lesson you’ll find:
• One short educational video
• A fillable workbook PDF
• Reflection prompts to help you recognize the compulsions OCD often hides
Start with the video, then move through the workbook at your own pace. Today is about noticing the urges to respond — and understanding how those responses keep the alarm system active.
You don’t need to change everything today. Just begin observing the pattern.
Remember: this challenge is a psycho-educational program designed to help you build skills, not therapy or medical care. If you are in crisis or experiencing thoughts of harming yourself or others, please seek immediate support. In the U.S., you can call or text 988 for the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.
Today we’re not trying to control the thoughts.
We’re learning how changing our response can begin to break the cycle.
