Day 1 - Understanding Your Fear System
Today we begin with something important.
Your reactions are not a sign that something is wrong with you. They are a normal response to something your brain has learned is dangerous. What keeps those reactions going is not the event itself — it’s the alarm system that continues to respond as if the danger is still present.
On Day 1, we’ll look at how trauma interacts with your brain’s fear system. You’ll learn why certain situations, thoughts, or memories can feel so intense, why your body reacts so quickly, and how the trauma cycle keeps the alarm switched on.
When you understand the system, something begins to shift. Instead of feeling overwhelmed by your reactions, you start to recognize the pattern.
Inside today’s lesson you’ll find:
• One short educational video
• A fillable workbook PDF
• Reflection prompts to help you notice how trauma shows up for you
Start with the video, then move through the workbook at your own pace. There’s nothing you need to do perfectly today. Day 1 is simply about awareness.
Remember: this challenge is a psycho-educational program designed to help you build skills, not therapy or medical care. If you are in crisis or experiencing thoughts of harming yourself or others, please seek immediate support. In the U.S., you can call or text 988 for the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.
Today we’re not trying to get rid of your reactions.
We’re simply learning why they happen and why they feel so powerful.
